Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand for introducing fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
